Welcome to Benatar Tribute

Hi I’m Steven Perez. I’ve been a long time fan of the 80s Arena Rock Diva, Pat Benatar. I’ve also followed the journey of Heart Breaker, a band formed by Pat Edgar as tribute to Pat Benatar.

Heart Breaker concentrates mainly on the earlier material however includes some album cuts and other “Benahead” favorites right up through Pat’s eighth album, Wide Awake In Dreamland. Pat has four grammy’s to her credit and her “Crimes Of Passion” LP sold enough copies to earn her a quadruple platinum rating. As well Pat Benatar was an MTV pioneer having been one of the very first artists to have a video in rotation, and even tougher a female artist! Her video, You Better Run, was one of the few played in MTVs very first hour on the air.

This site is dedicated to Pat Benatar and a tribute to her music genre.

Make it count!

A Brief Guide to Parachute Pants

Parachutes have gone through a lot of developments and use. Its purposes are not just escape devices. After the World War I and II more developments to its design lead it to be used for other purposes such as sports and recreation.

Parachutes are safer than they were decades ago, which garnered the interest of thrill seekers and extreme sport enthusiasts. Although the parachute is the main focus, other accessories such as the pants are also equally important. Parachute pants have also been associated with the 80’s.

The pants are used to go along with the parachute. Other designs include jumpsuits and wing suits. The design depends on its purposes. Companies make different prototypes that can be used in different kind of sports. They are also associated with the clothing trend during the 80’s and MC hammer.

break dancing
Break dancing arose on the pop culture scene in the eighties and is still popular today.

Pants for jumping and breakdancing

Parachute pants are made of ripstop nylon. This type of fabric is water repellent and lightweight. They have interweaving ripstop threads that are reinforced in a crosshatch pattern. This enables the pants to resist ripping or tearing. This type of fabric was also used to replace silk that were originally used in making parachutes in World War II.

These pants can be custom made and are made to fit the wearer. Companies have their own sizing system and use the customer’s measurements to make one. Typically, they have standard features such as elasticized waistband, crocodile closing system, zip front fly and Velcro knee reinforcements. They can be matched with a top.

They also became popular in American culture in the 80’s because of breakdancing. Break dancers used nylon to make their own trousers and jumpsuits. This enables them to do fast and intricate routines that they call “downrock” without tearing their pants. It also decreases the friction to be able to do speedy moves. The use of nylon and its large baggy cut resembled parachute pants. It was then later on labeled as parachute pants.

They gained more popularity when they were used by hip hop artists. This time they were light weight, loose fitted, and styled with excessive zippers, folds and pockets. The baggy cut and folds creates a visual effect which enhances the rhythm of the dancer’s moves. The pockets are not really usable and are merely used to add another zipper or another superficial feature to the pants. They are designed with bright colors, neon patterns, and Middle Eastern prints which are different from its predecessors made by break dancers.

These pants went out of style in the 90’s. They were rather mocked by people as an emblem of the era of excess which was the 80’s. They did make a comeback though but they were used by individuals in the Rave scene. Unlike before they became functional and the many pockets were put to use.

They have a zipper in the calf to vent the leg for cooling in hot dance floors or remove the lower part of the pants. The design and materials are similar to the ones in the 80’s but more usable. They were called “Phat Pants.”

Parachute pants, along with body position, enhance skydiving and play a big role when competing in sports. There are many companies that manufacture this type of clothing. They can also add drag and play a role in the aerodynamics of skydiving and other parachute sports.

Break dancing remains popular today. Competitions are held throughout the country every year and the dance style continues to evolve. Many groups still embrace the fashion and hair styles of the eighties associated with this popular activity. So why not get yourself a nice eighties hair style at a salon like the one here, find yourself some parachute pants online, and learn how to break dance!

Nothin’ Like The 80’s

Are you one of the many people who seem to still be stuck on the 80’s? Ok, so it was something like “a big deal”, but do you ever wonder what it is exactly that makes the 80’s so darn special? It seems like the 80’s has even made a killer impression on the kids of this generation. For instance, think of some of the things that only kids who grew up in that era know about. Do you notice how some things seem to be magically reappearing again? That is good, no, it’s great! But the guest appreances of these certain items don’t exactly have the same spirit or “feel” to it. Who cares, as long as the memory stays alive, the 80’s will never die, right?

Are you ready to get that overwhelmingly giddy feeling inside that only comes along when talking about some of the things that made the 80’s what is was? Remember the exact day you got the Original Nintendo Entertainment System? It either came with Super Mario Bros., Duckhunt or both. Do you remember staying up night after night, determined to “beat the game”. To the side of you was probably a soggy bowl of Nintendo cereal that didn’t even like but you just wanted it because it was “NINTENDO” cereal. What about the unforgettable Contra game that everyone to this day still knows the code that would get you unlimited lives? UP UP, DOWN DOWN, LEFT RIGHT, LEFT RIGHT, B, A, SELECT, START. You cant forget about the universal way to get your game to work, by blowing into the cartridge.

cassette tape, eighties
Remember these? And did you ever have this problem?

Enough talk about the video games, do you remember listening to songs like “Walk Like an Egyptian”, Thriller, and all the rest of Michael Jackon’s songs? Every kid had a Michael Glove as a part of their daily wardrobe and frustrated themselves to know end trying to perfect the “moon walk”. Getting my hair done like my hero, Pat Benatar down at the local hair salon that is still in business by the way as you can see here. I know all of you Ladies remember your Jem Doll that had the earing that lit up, and Punky Brewster was the coolest chick alive. Guys, I know you had your He-man action figures and probably those cheap plastic He-man character sneakers to go with them. Barbie dolls had such big hair that every little girl would spend hours playing with. What about all the accessories that went along with her, like the Dream house and convertible; you can’t forget barbie’s boyfriend Ken.

Remember Blue eye liner, just on the bottom lid? Crispy critters cereal, Garbage Pail Kids trading cards, Kids Incorporated, and the Micky Mouse Club were some of the minor things, but tapping into the wardrobe, faded beached denim was in. Remember people use to wear leggins under denim shorts just like Janet Jackson? Remenber loading up your bangs with hairspray so they would do that poufy curve thing-a-ma-jig? Mc Donalds was something to get excited about and MTV and Nickelodeon was the best television station in the world. Remember when the Goonies came out? What kid in their right mind did not want to be Goonie.

Big buttons were cool; the ones that would have either funny sayings or pictures of your favorite celebrity. Run DMC, LL Cool J and all the best rappers were keeping everybody bopping their heads; especiall the song “Rappers Delight”. There are so many things to mention; windbreaker jackets, Popples, Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Bright, Transformers, Ninja Turtles, Reebok Pumps, L.A. Gears with the lights on the bottom of the sneakers, Slap bracelets, watches on every part of your body including your hair, Layered slouched socks, High top fades, addidas shell toe sneakers, Teddy Ruxpin, ok, it’s time to take a breath.

Almost every 80’s kid owned a cabbage patch kid which they still have to this day who resembles either one of three people; themselves, their mother/father, or current spouse. We even had the best modes of transportation…big wheels, pogo sticks, pogo balls, scooters, power wheels, four wheel skates which were probably used almost every Saturday at the roller rink; those big wide skateboards with all the sandpaper that cut up your knees when you ran over broken up concrete. Man, those were the days.

Remember getting ready for the first day of school and being excited about using your brand new Trapper Keeper? Saturday mornings meant watching cartoons while eating our favorite box of cereal. Cartoons came on EVERY channel until School House Rock came on. “I know you are but what am I?” was the phrase that irritated friends and drove parents crazy. We were super smart because of programs like Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, Romper Room, 3-2-1 Contact and we understood that “knowing was half the battle”. We all dreamed of going on a “physical challenge” while watching Double Dare and our drawing skills are on point because of Win, Lose or Draw. Television shows actually instilled morals and parent’s didn’t have to worry about controlled viewing. We watched 21 jump street, Small Wonder, Mr. Belvedere, Facts of Life, Kids Incorporated, Different Strokes, Webster, Silver Spoons, Alf, Family Ties, Fraggel Rock…and others(feel free to add to the list if more come to mind).

As far as cartoons were concerned, Thunder. Thunder…Thundercats Ruled! Everyone knew the theme song to that and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. Flintstone Kids, G.I. Joe, Muppet Babies, A pup name Scoobie Doo, Heathcliff, Denise the Menace, Care Bears, Denver the last Dinosaur, Voltron, She-ra, Duck Tales, Super Mario Bros, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Get along Gang, the Jetsons, Ritchie Rich, The Snorks, The Smurfs, Jem, Gummie Bears, The popples, Rainbow Bright, and Rescue Rangers were a lot of favorites.

The Bottom line is the 80’s was what you call Fun! We snacked on Big Stuff Oreos, Bonkers, Nerds, even had crystal clear Pepsi. Summertime in the city was made for chasing Mister Softee down with our dollars waving in the air. What could these kids today possibly know about fun?

Indie Music

Indie music is a type of alternative rock which exists in the independent music world. The word is periodically used to refer to all underground music, and is the opposite of indie pop music. Indie rock music places an emphasis on electric instruments such guitars and drums. Musicians in the genre are also known for using abstract sounds. The term indie rock is used because musicians work under smaller record labels instead of the major record companies.

Though indie rock isn’t technically a genre, it is considered to represent the underground culture in many aspects. Indie artists are known for demanding a large amount of creative control over their music, and this is something which often alienates them from larger companies. Indie artists will strictly rely on word of mouth, tours, and independent radio stations in order to promote their music. Many of the popular artist will end up becoming popular with mainstream audiences, and may be signed by large record labels.

In the US indie music is considered to be a spin off from alternative rock. The movement is believed to have been started during the 1970s or 1980s. The indie rock music of the 1980s had a sounds which were described as being heavy and distorted. By the 1990s, indie music groups such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam became mainstream, and the genre became more widespread. Once the genre became popular, major record companies begin investing large amounts of money in it.

Once this happened, the term “alternative rock” became more of a misnomer. Traditionally, many musicians who have signed with major record companies were considered to be “sell outs” by their hardcore fans.

Sometimes the term indie rock becomes blurred, and some believe that the word will soon disappear much like alternative rock did. Mainstream artists such as Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys have been known to reach high levels on the indie music charts, especially in the United Kingdom. Some mainstream artists have even been signed to independent record labels. Many popular indie music artist become mainstream, and once this happens, they are no longer independent.

Despite the fact that many indie artists become mainstream, this is not always the case. In fact, most independent artists are not mainstream, and do not wish to be. Money may be a motivating factor, but many artists play their music for the passion and not the money. Many major record labels exert a large amount of control over their artists, and the music which is sold is more often the product of the record companies than the artists themselves. Because of this, many artists have fought with the major record labels over creative control of their music.
